Welcome to Kindergarten Information Packet

Welcome to Kindergarten. I hope this packet is helpful in answering some of the questions you may have as your child begins their educational journey. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.

What Will Your Child Learn in Kindergarten?

One thing is for sure, Kindergarten is not what it used to be! The days of nap and extended unstructured play are long gone! This article highlights some of the skills your child will learn based on the Common Core State Standards, a nationwide initiative to align states, schools and grade levels.

The Night Before Kindergarten:

What Parents Can Expect from the School Year

Twas the night before kindergarten, and as they prepared, kids were excited, and a little bit scared. It's the first day of school! Join the kids as they prepare for kindergarten, packing school supplies, posing for pictures, and the hardest part of all-saying goodbye to Mom and Dad. But maybe it won't be so hard once they discover just how much fun kindergarten really is!

Special Classes

Everyday we have a "special class built into our day.  We follow an 8-day cycle for these classes.
Here is the schedule we follow:

Homework

Monthly Homework Menu

Starting in October your child will begin bringing home a “Homework Menu” in a special homework folder. The activities on the “menu” are designed to provide extra practice and application of the skills we are learning in class.   The “menu” is not due until the end of the month, which should provide some flexibility to accommodate for busy schedules.  To complete the “menu” please choose 10 of the 15 activities to complete.  You need to initial the box of any activity your child completes.  Please return the completed “Monthly Homework Menu” in the folder by the date listed at the bottom of the “menu”.

Sight Words

We have a lot of words to learn this year!  I will include sight word flash cards on our weekly newsletter.  Please cut them out and use them to practice these words until your child can read them with ease.

Math

I will send home math homework with your child if they demonstrate difficulty with the concepts taught in class that day.  These pages should be completed the night they are sent home and returned to school the following day.

Reading Logs

Right after Thanksgiving your child will begin bringing home a short, self-selected book to read to/with you each night.  The book will come home in a special Book-in-a-Bag Ziploc bag.  This bag should be returned to school each day.  The bag will contain a reading log that you will complete every time you read a book together.  Each time your child finishes 20 books they will receive a brag tag and they will select a prize book to keep.  The goal for each child is to read 100 books in Kindergarten!

Healthy Snacks in Kindergarten

Your child should bring ONE mid-morning snack to school every day in their snack bag! This should be a healthy snack that is low in fat and sugar. Balanced nutritional snacks can help your child maintain energy and lengthen their attention span as well as provide fuel for growth and development. Click here for snack ideas.

Video: iPads in Kindergarten

We are very fortunate to be a 1:1 iPad classroom. The iPads help us explore the world and show what we know. They excite us, inspire us and empower us as young learners. We love learning with iPads! Click here for a video to see iPads in action in Kindergarten.
